PURPOSE:Liposuction can cause severe abdominal injuries, including necrotizing fasciitis and loss of abdominal domain, potentially requiring wall reconstruction to improve the patient's quality of life.
METHODS:A literature search (Figure 1) was conducted using MEDLINE and EMBASE databases to review abdominal wall reconstructive techniques following liposuction-inflicted abdominal injuries. The search terms included synonyms of “liposuction” in the title, synonyms of “abdomen,” and “complication” in the text.
RESULTS:380 studies were screened in the study. 10 papers described different techniques of abdominal reconstruction in 10 patients who had abdominal injuries after liposuction. Studies details can be observed in (Table 1).
CONCLUSION:Abdominal wall reconstructive techniques following liposuction-inflicted abdominal injuries varied in the literature. The commonly reported flow of care started with debridement of the damaged tissue, followed by wound care including negative pressure wound therapy and split-thickness split grafting to close a well-vascularized wound. After recovery, some patients underwent other abdominal wall reconstruction procedures, such as transversus abdominis release.
