PURPOSE: Combined surgery can allow for a single recovery period, fewer incisions, and reduced costs; however, it may increase the risk of complications. This study explores the relationship between concurrent surgeries with abdominal contouring procedures and complications.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of patients who underwent abdominal contouring surgery over an eight-year period was conducted. Complication severity was classified according to the Clavien-Dindo system. Univariate and multivariate logistical regressions were used to elucidate the relationship between combination surgery and post-operative complications.
RESULTS: Of 499 patients, 126 (25.3%) had combined surgery. Combination surgery was associated with increased rates of any complication (OR=1.94,
P<0.01), Clavien Dindo 2-4 complications (OR=1.65,
P=0.02), delayed healing (OR=1.70,
P=0.01), dehiscence (OR=2.69;
P<0.0001) and infection (OR=1.89,
P=0.02). Combination with other body contouring surgeries occurred in 49 (9.8%) patients and was not associated with an increased risk of post-operative complications (
Table 1). Liposuction was associated with increased rates of any complication (OR=3.81,
P<0.01), delayed healing (OR=2.76,
P=0.02), and infection (OR=3.07,
P=0.01). On multivariable analysis after controlling for confounding variables, combined surgery remained significantly associated with any complication and dehiscence.
CONCLUSION: Combining abdominal contouring surgeries with non-body contouring surgeries and liposuction is associated with increased rates of complications, unlike when combined with other body contouring surgeries. Concurrent body contouring can be safely considered for plastic surgery patients presenting for abdominal contouring surgery.
